House
of Boyd / Clan Boyd Society
A Short History of the Society from a Founding member
Richard G. Boyd
Dear Members
I am a Founding/Charter member of the House of Boyd Society becoming
member #14 LIFE in February of 1988. I, worked with William J. Boyd (#5), Marlea Rice Warren (#3), Col. and Mrs. Robert Quinn (#1-2), Phyllis
Boyd Laborde (#4), Mr. and Mrs. Alexander K. Boyd (#5-6), Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Quinn #11-12, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Boyd (#8), Mr. and Mrs.
Jerry Boyd (#9-10), Mary Jane Smith (#13), and several others starting in
February of 1988 and on October 15, 1988 we founded HOB at Stone Mountain, Georgia. I served on the Executive Board from 1989 until 1997.
I became Editor in1995 (and still publish the newsletter) I was
Secretary from 1996 to 1999. I have several copies of the Founding Members booklet that was published
in 1989 by William J. Boyd of Nashville, Tennessee. If anyone
wants a copy just contact me, Richard G. Boyd. www.clanboyd.info
In 1990 a feud developed between Lenore Dixon, Henry F. Boyd and one of
the original founders of the society and President at the time, William J. Boyd. The result was the first split within the society. During
that time I tried to remain neutral.
In 1994 another schism developed within the society with these same members and the result was that they split off from the original group
and formed another society (The Boyd Society). (They have now disbanded)
In 1994, Mr. William G. Barneyback (Barney), President HOB, asked me to
edit the newsletter for the Society. I accepted and edited the
newsletter from the January issue of 1995 up to today with the exception
of a few issues when I was having trouble with my hands.
Barney passed away in 1996 and the presidency fell to Donald Mellen of
N. Canton, Ohio. Mellen
was too busy to serve and was able to "do-nothing"
for the
Society.
But in 1996 he asked me to act as Secretary of the Society when that position became vacant and to fill that void until
the upcoming election. I accepted and served until the term ran out the next year.
In 1997 I decided to run for the Secretary's office. I had to give up my Executive Board position which I had held for eight years. By doing
so I gave up my right to vote with the Executive Board. That was the price I had to
pay. No one else had wanted to be Secretary and it is a job that must be done. As only Executive Board Members have a vote I lost that right
when I became Secretary. The Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Canadian Rep., or conveners can
not vote and have no say in the society.
In 1997 Lauren Beebe (now calling herself Lauren Boyd) was elected Executive Board member.
Since her election to the Board she criticized and contradicted just about everything I and others said and did. She did everything she could possibly do
to discredit me with the other officers. She got the ear of Cal Boyd (Executive Board
member who lives with her, (against the By-Laws of HOB) and between them they got the ear of President
Mellen. The rest is now history.
This is the third split within the society. Some people make the statement that it must be the Scottish clan trait of warring amongst
themselves that causes it. Perhaps, but I think it is just some people's
innate desire to run things their way that causes it and they must have
their name in lights.
David Drummond Boyd (HOB #749) Vice President of HOB and Grover A. Gore (HOB #362) Honorary Life Member, Executive Board Member and acting
attorney for HOB have relayed to me that what they have done is against
the by-laws of the HOB Society, against Robert's Rules of Order and therefore illegal. Grover Gore is the second person ever to be named
to an Honorary Membership by the Executive Board Members of HOB.
(The late) James Henderson Boyd (#130), Representative of the Boyds in Canada relayed to me his disgust at the actions they have taken.
In 1999 Lauren Beebe (now calling herself Lauren Boyd) held an illegal election, and at the Pleasanton games in California voted themselves in
office. They placed no one on the ballot except whom they wanted to become officers. These actions are against everything the original
founders desired the House of Boyd society to be. In fact, there is not one of the original founders still active in Lauren's HOB Society. According to the by-laws of HOB which I helped
write in 1994, there was supposed
to be an election of officers in 2001, 2003, and 2005. I wonder why elections didn't take
place? No elections have been held since 1999, leaving Lauren Beebe president continuously since then. Also, according to the original by-laws, Life membership dues (In excess of $6000.00) were mandated to be held in a separate account and not used. I wonder how much of this LIFE DUES MONEY is still intact. I wonder who will end up holding this money.
My wife Jerri Lynn and I continue the original society. And with your approval and your support we are going to continue to do so. We have already
produced two newsletters (July/ 1999 and October, 1999) and will continue
to publish them as long as we have your support. (Still publishing
in 2007)

I want to thank all those members who have renewed
and otherwise supported us. For a long time I felt as though someone knocked me down and stomped me into the dirt. I wanted to give up. But
letters of support kept coming in - from long time members - as well as the newest members. It lifted my spirits and gave me reason to continue on,
to persevere, and to publish a newsletter and web site everyone will enjoy.
In closing I want to give our new Clan Boyd Society, International Home page
address for those of you who have internet access. Copy and paste this to your
web browser and if you have any suggestions for the Home page or anything you
would like to see on it, please advise.

Rich,
Just got shifted to the new Web site and it is beautiful. I also wanted to
say that I was glad to see your explanation about the House of Boyd. If you
hadn't done that, I was getting ready to ask you about it. Both of you
advertise in the Family Tree newsletter (actually a little tabloid paper) out
of Moultrie, GA which I receive. Your statements about her* answered a lot
of my questions about the other Boyd list too. Put her alongside that Mike
Boyd person and you can see why I thought that list was full of the most rude and pompous people I had ever come across. I think they "lurk" on your list and waylay people when they put messages on the ClanBoyd list. That's what
she did to me and told me not to submit my Boyds to John's Boyd Trees project
because I would lose "control" of my information. She invited me to the
Boyd-L list, I got on, stayed about two weeks and got off. This was several
months ago. Then Mike got me and I got away from him too. I think he is not
quite right in the head.
I appreciate your telling us what was going on. I hate politics too and
the
way you are doing it will certainly take care of that.
Thanks, again, for the great site, the great newsletter, and for maintaining
a dignified but friendly list.
Judy Kilgore
Rich;
Thanks for the newsletter. It is very good and quite interesting.
There certainly seems to be a lot of animosity between the two Boyd
groups. Your newsletter actually is much better.
