John Boyd Dunlop

John Boyd Dunlop, inventor of the first successful pneumatic tire.

He was born 5 Feb 1840 in Dreghorn, Ayrshire, Scotland.  He was a veterinary doctor. He moved to Belfast, Northern Ireland where he married Margaret Stevenson, the daughter of James Stevenson, a Ballymena farmer.  Later he moved to Dublin. He  died in 1921 at the age of 81. He had a brother James Boyd.

His "pneumatic tyre" was patented 7 Dec 1888.  His first tires were used on his son Johnie's tricycle.  He was already very wealthy from his veterinary practice and his patented medicines and sold his tire patent to Harvey DuCros for $500.00 English pounds and 3000 shares of stock. He was a member of the board of directors.
