American Loyalists

George Boyd - of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. A member of the Council under the Royal Government of that Province. On approach of troubles of the Revolution, he abandoned the country and was included in the Proscription Act of New Hampshire of 1778. While abroad he acquired wealth. In 1887, he adjusted his affairs, and embarked for his native land, full of hope. Riding was among his enjoyments; and he procured a handsome coach and an English coachman. He died at sea two days before the ship arrived at Portsmouth, and his remains were interred at his elegant mansion. His wife was Jane, daughter of Joseph Brewster. She bore him five sons and five daughters. Submit, the youngest, born 1774, was thus named, as is said, to indicate his opinion of the duty of the colonies in the existing controversy with the mother country.

Military Activities of the Loyalists

Colonel Boyd - 1779 - "of the lower Yadkin River in Anson County, near the South Carolina border, collected a force of Loyalists and started to join him (Colonel John Hamilton who was organizing a Loyalist regiment in Florida); in command of a corps of Tories, who were robbers rather than soldiers. He was bold, enterprising, and famed for his dishonesty.
