to Sgt; Rifle Co - Feb 1944 at Camp Pickett, VA - By June he had an
California APO address and the letters were V-Mail, passed by a censor,
shrunk and a photocopy. In Sept. he says that he was "on the battlefield of
Guam...came through the battle without a scratch." In Feb 1945 he mentions
having been away from home almost 4 years and mentions "Filopino boys" so he
must have been in the Philippine Islands at that time. the letter was censored but not photocopied and shrunk. By April 15 he had changed locations
again. "I had another boat ride and saw some action in the Kerama Retto Campaign. I saw some very exciting air fights and a lot of other things that
were much more sad than exciting." This letter was once again a photocopy as
were these last ones. By May 27, 1945 he was in Okinawa "wading mud up to the
top of my boots and listening to the guns pound, but I have been glad I didn't have to sleep out in the rain..." June 12 - "...I have been busy and
sleeping in fox holes....still in Okinawa but at a rest camp now.." July 23...I have changed my address and am with an engineer outfit....I like these
engineers better than the infantry and believe my fighting days are over."
August 3.... received first mail in five weeks..." The last letter I have is
dated August 12 when he was still in Okinawa and waiting for word about when
they would be sending him home. His rank was still a Sgt.
