St Boswells

"BOSWELL'S (ST.), or LESSUDDEN, a parish containing a post-office
village of its own name, on the north border of Roxburghshire. It is bounded
on the north by Berwickshire, and on other sides by the parishes of Maxton,
Ancrum, Bowden, and Melrose. Its length north-eastward is 3 miles; and its breadth is about 1 1/2 mile. The Tweed, flowing between bold, beautiful, well-wooded banks, forms the boundary with Berwickshire ... Population of the parish of St Boswell's in 1831, 701; in 1861, 865."

"The VILLAGE OF ST BOSWELL's or LESSUDDEN stands on the east side of the parish, nearly opposite Dryburgh Abbey, 4 miles south-east of Melrose, and 10 west-south-west of Kelso. The original village of St Boswell's stood about 3/4 of a mile soth-east of this, but has completely disappeared. It derive its name from St Boisel, who was the preceptor of St Cuthbert, and is
supposed to have founded the church. The present village generally bears the name of Lessudden, and may have originally been called Lis-Aidan, which means the residence of Aidan, or perhaps Lessedwin - as it is in the old chartularies - that is, the manor-place of Edwin."

From the Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland, edited by John Marius Wilson, 1868.

While BOYD is not related to my ancestral surnames, tracking down some information about a prominent BOYD is linked to tracking my family.

My interest is John BOYD who is listed as Sheriff-Substitute in the 1901 census of St. Boswells, Roxburghshire. He was 44. I cannot make out the name of the residence - two words, each ending in what appears to be
'poffle'. The house was very large, 22 rooms with windows. The only other residents in the home were unrelated, a cook and tablemaid. The other listed on the census page were Domestic Servants; Gardeners, Groom, Footman, Parkkeeper, etc.

From this it appears the John BOYD was not only a powerful judicial figure in the community but also quite wealthy, employing many local people to maintain his property and horses. And since his wife and children are not listed, either they were away from home at the time of the census, or lived in another home located somewhere else in the "Sheriffdom".

So this John BOYD may be an important figure in BOYD genealogy in Scotland. Learning more about him and his landholdings would greatly aid me in researching my family history.

My grandfather, Duncan CLARK, is listed on that same census page as a Gardener - Domestic Servant, and my father, James CLARK is listed as 12 -Scholar. But the family seem to move about quite a bit (odd for a Gardener) and appear in Strathblane in 1891, and Catherness in 1881. Their children were born in a variety of other locations too, between those dates.

I suspect my grandfather worked for John BOYD and was transferred between his various property holding over the years. Until I learn more about John BOYD, I cannot confirm it this is true.

I hope your site members know something about this prominent John BOYD and can shed some light upon his history and family. As a minimum, you now know of a prominent BOYD.

Many Thanks in advance,

Jim Clark
