The AIS Indexes
(Accelerated Indexing Systems)- US Census Indexes, are on microfiche
through your LDS Family History Center. The AIS indexes are alphabetical
listings of some of the people living in the US between 1607 and 1906.
The listings were compiled from various sources such as state census',
tax lists, indentured servant lists, residence lists, oath of allegiance
lists, petition list, muster rolls, voter lists, probate records,
veterans schedules, slave schedules, passenger lists, and mortality
schedules. For the years 1790 and later, information from the federal
census is also included (there was no Federal Census before 1790). The
indexes usually provide enough information about individuals listed,
that you should be able to find them in the original record.
Each AIS index covers ten or more years and a large geographical area,
such as several states, which will make it easier to find an ancestor.
To confirm the data in
the AIS census indexes, one should consult the original source documents
which are usually noted in the AIS data.

1790 Census
The United States
government has transcribed the 1790 censuses for 11 states. They are
available as books for Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South
Carolina, and Vermont. The books are also available on microfilm or
microfiche. In the front of the book is the census; in the back of the
book is an index by last name, then first name. These are the original
census schedules for 1790. Schedules for some counties are missing.
No schedules are known to
exist for Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, and
Virginia. However, census substitutes for those six states exist (1790
Census substitute index) and Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey and
Tennessee are at the end of this listing.
The above is not a
*COMPLETE* list of the 1790 Census Index.
