Descendants of Thomas Boyt

Hi Rich,
I was browsing the net and came across your page. I wanted to let you know
that the confederate soldier you have listed as G.T. Boyd - alternate spelling as Boyett, is a bit off. The G.T. Boyett who served in the 22nd Tennessee is actually my GG Grandfather, George Thomas (Talmus) Boyett - his son Talmus Eli Boyett was my Grandfather's dad. George was the son of Eli C. Boyett from Gibson County TN. They descend from Thomas Boyt of Nansemond County, Virginia. I have attached a file that outlines my family's research.

Mike Boyett

From Boyt to Boyett, The descendants of Thomas Boyet
by Wendy L. Elliott, C.G.

Eli C. Boyett remained in Bedford County when his father and family moved farther west into Gibson County, Tennessee.  Eli was living in Bedford County when it split and Coffee County was formed in 1836;  Eli's residence was then in Coffee County in the first district which is the northwest corner of Coffee County.

Eli married first Parthenia Jernigan on 8 Jan 1833 in Bedford County.
She was the daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth (Thompson) Jernigan.
They moved to the "swamps of west Tennessee, near what is now
Rutherford, Gibson County."  While there, their first child was born,
but both the baby girl and Parthenia died the same day.

Eli returned to Bedford County, Tennessee after the death of his wife
and child; he settled near a little place called "Jernigan".  He then
married Parthenia'a sister;  her name was Sarah A. Jernigan, but she was
always called Sally.  They married on 9 Jan 1834 in Beech Grove, Bedford
County, Tennessee.  Sally was born 25 Feb 1812 in Bedford County.

A deed dated 11 Jan 1844 shows that the 88 acres that Eli had owned in
Coffee County, Tennessee was sold to his father-in-law Alexander
Jernigan (it is spelled "Jernagen" in the record).  This same 88 acres
was granted by the State of Tennessee to Eli on 18 Apr 1839.

Eli and Sally moved from Coffee County to Gibson County, Tennessee about
1844.  Tax records for Coffee County show Eli there through 1844.  The
family was listed in the 1840 Coffee County, Tennessee census.  The
above mentioned deed for 88 acres of land, recorded in January, 1844
gives the place of residence for Eli as "of Coffee County, State of
Tennessee".  This indicates that the move was made after that date.

On the second day of August, 1847, Eli posted a Constable's bond in
Gibson County.  This bond was to the Governor of Tennessee for $4,000.00
because Eli had "duly elected to serve as constable for the county of
Gibson and said State to fill the term of J. J. Wren".  The posting of the bond was a custom enacted to ensure that one fulfills his office and obligation in a desirable manner.  This record establishes that he had been residing within the county, at least long enough to become an elected officer of the county.

Later court records for Gibson County show that he was taxed for 368
acres in Civil District #10.  From 1875 through 1878 he was taxed for
only 40 acres;  deeds show that he distributed portions of his land to
some of his sons.  The family property was located four miles west of
Rutherford, Tennessee which is today known as the "Sam Houston farm".

A school known as Boyett's School was located on the farm.  Records show
that Eli and all his adult children could both read and write.

Eli was Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge #352 in Rutherford, Tennessee
in 1856.  One hundred years late in 1956 his grandson, Lynn Boyett, was
Worshipful Master of the same lodge.

Sally and Eli were two of the 39 Charter Members of Bell's Chapel
Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Rutherford, Tennessee as denoted by
a bronze plaque which hangs on the back wall of its Chapel.  The church
was organized and chartered in 1875.  Also another Charter Member of
this country church was Mary (Polly) Whitley, mother-in-law of Eli and
Sally's oldest son, William.

Shortly after Bell's Chapel Church was organized, Eli and Sally gave one
half acre of land "unto John Porter & J. B. Porter, Deacons of the
Christian Church at Liberty Grove, Gibson County & State of Tennessee
and then successors as Deacons forever fro the consideration of Twelve &
50/100 Dollars in hand paid a certain lot or parcel of land it lying and
being in Gibson County & State of Tennessee Civil District No 10."  This
deed was dated 25 May 1875 and signed by both Eli and Sally Boyett; she
signed with her mark.  This was recorded in Deed Book 7, page 63.

The land donated for the school site was one acre of land also in Civil
District #10.  This deed is recorded in Book 10, page 612.

Although Eli was a Justice of the Peace, only one instance where he
performed a marriage for his kinsman is recorded in Gibson County,
Tennessee.  This marriage was on 13 Mar 1856 between M. R. Head and
Catherine Cope.  It may be that most of the Boyetts were married in a
church or by a minister of the Gospel rather than a Justice of the Peace.

Eli served as guardian for several children; among those were James E.
and H. P. Pipkin.  He was their guardian for over 14 years from 2 Oct
1854 through 1 Dec 1868.  From as early as November 1851 he served as
Administrator of estates of at least seven of his neighbors.

Eli's death is recorded in the 1880 Mortality Schedule of the Federal
Census in Civil District #10 of Gibson County, Tennessee.  His cause of
death was listed as pneumonia; his death occurred on 1 Jan 1880.  Sally
probably died of cancer, as it is told that her nose was eaten away by
cancer before her death on 10 Sept 1898 in Gibson County, Tennessee.
Eli and Sally are both buried in North Union Cumberland Presbyterian
Cemetery.  Eli has a Masonic emblem on his tombstone.
