John  Boyd, Berkeley County, West Virginia

John Boyd, born in England.  One of the earliest settlers of the county.  Acquired large holdings at the eastern base of the North Mountain near where the County Infirmary is now located.  Was an Indian fighter as all early settlers were required to be on account of the frequent incursions of the savages, and always came off victorious in his many encounters with them.  Was the father of General Elisha Boyd of the Second War with England.  Was the ancestor of Colonel John E. Boyd, a noted soldier in the Civil War, of which Sheridan remarked, " He would hang him as high as Haaman", but did not quite get the opportunity, and of Robert H. Boyd, a distinguished attorney of the Berkeley Bar.  He left a larger family: Charles Boyd, Margaret Boyd, Fulton Boyd, John Boyd, William Boyd, Rachael Boyd, Bailey Boyd, Elijah Boyd, Mary Boyd, Munford Boyd, and Elisha Boyd.  With the exception of Elisha, the children were among the earliest emigrants to Kentucky.  Hon. Lem Boyd, of Kentucky, for several years Speaker of the House of Representatives, was a descendant of his.
