CONFEDERATE
ARMY
Maryland had about five
Confederate regiments. The list below is all
that I could find.
Boyd,
James William, of Maryland, Capt. Sixth Reg. Tenn. Vol., head of
Secret Service in Western Tennessee. Confederate Prisoner of war
captured in August, 1863 by the NDP. Two others captured with him, Harry
D'Arcy and James E. Watson and were executed as spies. Boyd worked
as a double agent for the Union and was supposedly killed at Garretts Farm in place
of John Wilkes Booth according to the book "The Lincoln Conspiracy" David Balsiger
and Charles E. Sellier, Jr., Schick Sunn Classic Books, 1977, Chaper 7
pages 82 and 83.
Dear Mr. Boyd,
Thank you for your help. I sincerely appreciate your response.
I have read "The Lincoln Conspiracy" by Balsiger and Sellier. The book is
interesting (so are the fake memoirs of Hitler) and the movie that Ted Turner made from the book is entertaining. Unfortunately, there is little
sound research for many of the more controversial claims. In fact, many reputable Lincoln historians believe crucial points made to support the
'grand conspiracy' theory have been fabricated. Balsiger (and his company
Schick Sunn) seems to be at the center of much controversy regarding the
accuracy of projects he has been involved in. The hunt for Noah's Ark is
another project involving Balsiger and Schick Sunn that has been exposed as
fraudulent.
James William Boyd is only one example of the problems surrounding the
Lincoln conspiracy theories embraced by Ray Neff, David Balsiger and Charles
Sellier. It seems that Neff, Balsiger and Sellier are the only people that
have any substantive information about Boyd. Every picture claiming to be
James William Boyd is attributable to Ray Neff and I too can find little
independent information about this man or his military record. So many writers about the Lincoln assassination have simply 'referenced' Neff,
Balsiger and Sellier on James William Boyd, that his role seems to be taken
for granted, without a critical look at the records. The entire book is based upon the premise that Boyd, not Booth, was killed at Garrett's farm,
yet there is very little to substantiate that he was involved. George
Atzerodt, in his confession about his involvement in the Lincoln assassination, mentions a man named Boyle that was involved in the
conspiracy to kidnap Lincoln. Balsiger and Sellier claim that Boyle and Boyd
are the same man.
The same confusing situation is true of claims made by Neff, Balsiger and
Sellier about the "missing" pages from Booth's diary.
Kind regards,
Dr. Mark E. Keeney
