ANDREW BOYD ~ MARY MACKAY

FREDERICK, MD
[ and misc. notes on Maryland Boyds ]

The background of the Andrew Boyd who married Mary MacKay in Frederick, Maryland, on 25 June 1783 has yet to be determined. Attempts to connect Andrew to the several Andrew and Mary Boyds in Cumberland, York, and Adams counties in Pennsylvania, Baltimore city, and other Boyds in Maryland have not been successful. The Maryland Historical Society's accession #48732 given by Mrs. Margaret Bridges Blakeslee in 1941 includes the "Boyd-McKay Family Bible" and two versions of a typed and unsigned article on "The Boyds of Frederick."  One version states "Andrew Boyd, the first member of the family to settle in Frederick, was born on September 25, 1749. The date of his arrival in this country is not known." The other states "Andrew Boyd was the first member of the family to settle in Frederick, but the date of his arrival there is not known." That is the same birth date hand-written in the bible for that of Mary McKay Boyd, which would have made her thirty-four years old when she was married. The bible has no written mention of Andrew, and the birth and death dates of others appear to have been written by someone in the following generation, the last entry being 1842.  Dr. Albert Francis Blakeslee, whose wife was the donor of the above documents, stated on a paper obtained from another descendant that Andrew Boyd came from Scotland with his brother, William, who went to Kentucky. No source is given. An unsigned biography of Andrew's grandson, Dr. Charles Mifflin Boyd, 1826-1887, states that "he came from a very affluent family...."

What we do know is that in 1779 Andrew Boyd bought Lot 91 (East Church to East Second St. beside Middle Alley) and was listed as "weaver," married Mary MacKay in 1783, had four children baptized in the Evangelical Reformed Church, and had two living children and four slaves listed in the 1790 census. The two children were Mary Ann, born 1787, and David, born 1790. He was listed as" merchant" in the will of his father-in-law, William MacKay, in 1797, and he died in 1807/8. William was an immigrant from Sutherland, Scotland, and his wife's father, James Pearre, had come from Aberdeenshire. MacKay and Pearre were termed "tailor," and Andrew was a "weaver," yet all three had the means to buy property in Maryland.

His son, David, was deeded the house on Lot 91 on East Church St. (later 101 East Church St.) and had fourteen children, one of which, Andrew, had eight children. David advertised his weaving and blue dying business on Church and Second Street between 1811 and 1815, and in later years the family had a store beside the City Market on Market St. Family members bought and sold property in both the town and county. Although Andrew's children were baptized in the Reformed church, David and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Meissell, joined the Methodist church about 1807, and David "became one of the principal pillars in the church," according to the "Sketches of the early History of the Methodist Church of Frederick." Upon David's death in 1862, the official body of the Methodist church wrote lengthy laudatory resolutions on "Brother Boyd," and the writer of the "Sketches," who had known David since 1820, added another paragraph to state that "Bro. Boyd was one of the principal men who saved our church in Frederick from a similar fate" to those others in a "radical controversy when many of the most prominent appointments ...were torn to pieces and became mere wrecks from which they have not recovered fully to the present day."

Mary Anne Boyd was married to Job Hunt III by the Rev. David Martin 5 July 1808, which was shortly after her father's death. The Williams History of Frederick states that "Job Hunt, a class leader and trustee, married Mary Boyd, a lady of the purest Christian character, and together they consecrated their talents, time and means to the service of the Lord as Methodists." In 1814, following the sale of their house on Lot 38 on the south side of East Patrick Street, the family moved to Hagerstown, where they lived on Potomac and Franklin streets, and continued its close association with the Methodist church. She was the mother of seven children: Sarah Ann, who died as an infant in 1810; Asbury Hemphill, 1811-1900, who remained in Frederick; Elizabeth Hopkins 1814-1877, a spinster; Samuel 1817-1896, who moved to Baltimore; and the twins, Jesse Johns and David Boyd, born in April 1823, a few months before their father's sudden death. More details are in the Hunt section.

Job's estate was administered by his brother-in-law, David Boyd, and Mary Ann; after the sale of the property in Hagerstown, Mary Ann removed to Frederick with her children. She and her husband were obviously close to David Boyd, and both men named sons after the other: Job Hunt Boyd, and David Boyd Hunt. Mary Ann Boyd Hunt died 1 February 1848 in Frederick.  The author of the Methodist "Sketches" wrote in the 1849 entry "Mary A. Hunt the widow of the man of God, Job Hunt (long since deceased) died this year in great peace....Sister Hunt was remarkable for plainness & modesty, & a strict attention to her religious duties. She was blessed with a happy death."

In the 1770s there was also in Frederick Archibald Boyd from England and Abraham Boyd of the John Boyd family from Southern Maryland. Both of these are well documented, and there is no obvious connection to Andrew. Andrew's wife, Mary MacKay, had a Scottish father and mother. The Thomas and Andrew Boyd family from Pennsylvania was Irish, but regardless of the coincidences of the names, research shows that none of the Andrews there could possibly have been our Andrew. None of the other Baltimore Boyds nor those listed by Mrs. Markell fit our Andrew. We are now assuming that the statement of Dr. Blakeslee is correct, and that our Andrew was actually a Scottish immigrant.

Maryland Historical Society:

Accession 48732 given by Mrs. W.A. Blakeslee Dec 1941 in Filing Case A: "Boyd-McKay Bible" -  Typed copy of data from the bible appear to be accurately transcribed, although there are torn and illegible sections. The bible was searched personally 7 April 1994.  It was wrapped as the "Andrew Boyd Bible", However, the lists of births and deaths extended to 1842 in what appeared to be the same hand, and there were no entries at all for the first Andrew Boyd. The wording "Mary Boyd that was Mary McKay, was born September 25th, 1749." might indicate that this, along with entries of earlier events, was added after there was another "Mary Boyd."

Two versions of a typed paper entitled "THE BOYDS OF FREDERICK". One states: "Andrew Boyd, the first member of the family to settle in Frederick, was born on September 25th, 1749. The date of his arrival in this country is not known." It is in doubt about the marriage of Mary Ann Boyd to Job Hunt. Theother version states "Andrew Boyd was the first member of the family to settle in Frederick, but the date of his arrival there is not known."  It makes no reference to Mary Ann's marriage.

Neither version includes the children of Andrew and Ann MacKay Boyd who did not live. The birth date given for Andrew Boyd is exactly that for the birth date of Mary MacKay Boyd which is hand-written in the "Boyd-McKay Bible" in the Maryland Historical Society, which makes that open to doubt.

Other books researched in the Maryland Historical Society:

Scott Lee Boyd, compiler, "The Boyd Family" in The Parrish Family: The family of William Boyd, the immigrant from the northern part of Ireland to Cumberland Twp. PA c. 1710-1767. This is possibly the same William mentioned on page 21 in his The Boyd Family, and no Andrew is listed in the index for this William Boyd branch.

The Boyd Journals, Heckert - an academic work on James McHenry Boyd 1845-46. The genealogical chart shows no connection to Frederick, although he had a brother Andrew died 1815 and sister Mary died 1811.

Boyd Military Records, Annie Walker Burns - no listing for our Andrew

The Barron Family Boyds were in Virginia in 1790 and Kentucky in 1837

The Boyd Family Journal 1925-28, Adairsville, GA are all Southern.

Broyle's "Montague Lafitte Boyd" of Savannah, 1959 mentions John Boyd of MD 1738 who married Charity Talbot, and Walter Boyd, a LT who "commanded Fort Frederick", but no mention of Andrew

James Alexander Boyd of Boyd's, MD was born in Ayrshire 1823: There are many mentions of the fact that Boyds settled in almost all the Eastern states. Many pages have been written on the Boyds of Kilmarnock, but no specific connection of an immigrant to the titled family has been given. Many of the Boyd immigrants were actually Irish.

Note: They may have lived in Ireland and considered Irish when they came to America, but they were transplanted Scots and known in America as Scotch- Irish. In Ireland they were known as Ulster-Scots.  See: http://www.clanboyd.info/outsideusa/ireland/history/petition/  (RG Boyd)

The Boyd Family Charts:  John Boyd 1730-1799 and Samuel Boyd (from Ireland) 1682-1770 show no connection to Andrew of Frederick.

25 Apr 1994 - researched Adams Co. Record Room with Nancy Lesure - other than finding that Alexander, the son of the Andrew and Mary Boyd who moved from PA to Baltimore, sold his PA property, there was nothing to connect this family to Andrew and Mary MacKay Boyd of Frederick. We still have the Andrew and Mary Boyd of Cumberland Co. who bought and sold property near Fort Frederick in 1770, the one or more Andrews of Cumberland Co. in the 1790 censuses, one of which was the son of Thomas and Rebecca and had wife Mary who moved to Baltimore. Our Andrew Boyd was of age in 1779 (bought Lot 91 in Frederick) and too old to be the son of the Andrew from PA who died 1802 in Baltimore.

Scott Lee Boyd's The Boyd Family, Santa Barbara, CA 1935 and "Peerage of Scotland", BOYD, Lord Boyd and Earl of Kilmarnock (accession #48732 in MHS), both go into much detail of the Boyd family in Scotland, with no actual immigrant connecting an appropriate immigrant Boyd with this family.

 -----------
David Boyd was very close to his sister, Mary Ann, who married Job Hunt 5 July 1808, in Frederick. Job and Mary Ann Boyd Hunt named one of their twins, born in 1823, "David Boyd Hunt."  Job Hunt died suddenly in 1823, and David Boyd named his next son, born in 1824, "Job Hunt Boyd." During part of the 1850s, three Hunt brothers, David Boyd Hunt, Jesse Johns Hunt, and Asbury Hemphill Hunt, and their cousin, Andrew Boyd, above, were all merchants in the second block of North Market St.
