Obituary: Fred Boyd, Rockford, MI

04/14/2002

Fred Boyd, aged 88, passed away on Saturday morning, April 13, 2002. He was a 1931 graduate of Rockford High School and attended Davenport College. Since 1948 he was a member of First Congregational Church of Rockford and was also a charter member of the Rockford Lions Club and a past President. On January 1, 1951, Fred purchased Boyds Recreation, located at 25 Main Street in Rockford, and operated it until October 1980. Prior to that, he worked for Lee Aldrich at Rockford Motor Sales (Chevrolet dealership) and Michigan Crank Shaft which was located in the warehouse behind the old Rockford Hardware. He helped in the war effort during WWII by working in Romulus and making airplanes and before that, he worked for Sun Oil Company. Mr. Boyd was a man who did it my way. He enjoyed a good cigar and was very deliberate in everything that he did. He was a gentleman who gave a lot of good advice to the many young people in the community. He believed there was no such thing as a juvenile delinquent -- only delinquent parents. In his teenage years, he was an active member of Demolay (a social group that was affiliated with the Masons). Mr. Boyd is survived by his wife, the former Kathryn Kies, whom he married on May 29, 1937; his children, Bonnie and Harold Braman of Greenville, and William Bill and Jean Boyd of Rockford; his grandchildren, J.R. Braman of Ann Arbor, Sarah Braman-Smith and her husband, Jamie, of Interlochen, Andrew Braman of Greenville, Scott and Heidi Oostdyk of Jenison, Randy and Sandra Oostdyk, and Sandy Oostdyk, all of Grand Rapids, and Nanci Oostdyk of Belmont; six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Doris Boyd of Lowell, Helen and Robert Hessler of Rockford; nieces and nephews, James and Dee Boyd of Utah, Robert and Carlinda Boyd of Lowell, Janet Boyd of Lowell, and Mrs. Bruce (Dianne) Skiver of Rockford. Mr. Boyd was preceded in death by his brother, Edward. The Service for Mr. Boyd will be on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Laurel TenHave- Chapman officiating. Interment in Rockford Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the First Congregational Church of Rockford, UCC. Friends may celebrate Mr. Boyds life with his family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Pederson Funeral Home, Rockford.
