James Boyd, Carroll County, Ohio

Letters from Hugh S. Boyd, Baltimore, MD to brother James Boyd

Carroll Co; Ohio

Hugh S. Boyd Family Information  -   (Family Letters Below)

The family starts with Alexander Boyd in Cecil Co. MD.  It is thought that Alexander was born about 1715, but this date does not fit and we are trying to get a better idea of how far back to push it, at this time.  Alexander died, according to probate, 27 Nov 1780, in Cecil Co. MD.  His wife's name was Margaret.  They had the following children;

Margaret Boyd b. abt 1741
Robert Boyd b. abt 1743
Hugh Boyd b. abt 1745
Francis Boyd b. abt 1747
Alexander Boyd b. abt 1750  ( I believe Alexander was in the Rev. War)

The above information was kindly provided by Betty Jones. My cousin and I were stuck at Hugh Boyd for many years, unable to get the right connection. There was an age gap that wasn't right.  With the information from Betty and the copies of wills she sent, it became clear that we were missing a generation.  Our Hugh was the son of Francis listed above, and the grandson of Alexander, not the son.

Francis Boyd b. abt 1747 in Cecil Co. MD, married Esther or Hester ?  and died 11 April 1797 in Cecil Co. MD.  They had the following children;

Esther Boyd b. ca 1759  m. Hugh Steel 17 Oct 1796.  both mentioned in father's will
Elizabeth Boyd b. ? d. Oct 1797    mentioned in will
Hugh Boyd b. abt 1763
Sarah Boyd b. abt 1765  m. ? Williams  mentioned in will

Some of the above information was sent after I made a connection on rootsweb and the Boyd surname listing, and was sent to me by Charles Fitzgerald.

Hugh Boyd b. abt 1763  m. Jane Steel (sister to the above) 7 June 1788. mentioned in will   d.17 Sept 1811 buried, Port Deposit, Cecil Co. MD.  They had the following children;

Francis Boyd b. 8 Jan 1791  d. 11 June 1870    m. Sarah C. Patterson 10 Feb 1827 this is Charles' line and I will leave it for him to fill in as he wishes.

James  Boyd b. 14 Dec 1789

Mary Boyd b. 13 Jan 1795  d. 13 July 1868, Hancock Co. WV.  m. James Jones  11 May 1815 Cecil Co. MD.  this is Betty's line and I will leave it for her to fill in.  At this time I don't know if Betty is on line, if anyone feels they connect to this line, send me your request via my email and I will send Betty's address to you. William b. abt 1797  Had no other information on him till I received the letters.  Anyone with lines to a William Boyd in Sacramento CA, at the time of the Gold Rush let me know, we may be related.

John  Boyd b. 24 May 1807  d. abt 1835 - 1837  left land to his brothers and sisters, in Cecil Co. MD

Sarah Boyd b. 6 Aug 1795 (I think this is darn near impossible, she wouldn't even be 9 months from the birth of her sister)  m. ? Brown, as per letter.
Jane b. 1805 ( per letters)  m. ?  Hatch  She was married 3 times, I take it Mr. Hatch was the last one.;-)

Rebecca Boyd b. abt 1805  m. Joseph Scarborough
Hugh S. Boyd b. 30 Jan 1799 (from letters)
EstherBoyd  b.  abt 1788 (per letters) m. ? Harlan

Rachel Boyd b. 2 July 1801

Elisabeth Boyd b. 3 Oct 1802,   These 2 are not mentioned in their father's or mother's will. May have died young.  They were sent with the information from Charles that he had found in Port Deposit, MD.

I will fill out more of Hugh S. Boyd's family as he wrote the letters. And James' line as that is mine.

Hugh S. Boyd b. 30 Jan 1799  m.  ?  twice. Never mentions wife's name in the letters, only that she is his 2nd wife.  He had the following children; Mary Boyd, Jane Boyd,  Williamina Boyd m. ? Finley and living in D.C. as of 1867; A. J. or Andrew or Jackson Boyd b 2 Feb 1837 was in Civil War on the Union side, living in Little York, PA in 1867  ( all three of the names were used in the letters, I believe them to all be one and the same)  Albert H. Boyd d. 28 April 1869  Was in the Civil War on the side of the Union, he is referred to in another letter as Hugh's youngest son. I feel he was to the second wife. He was a conductor on the Baltimore city rail cars in 1867.      Another daughter is mentioned, but no name given.

James Boyd b. 14 Dec 1789  d. 27 June 1872  Monroe twp. Carroll Co. OH  m. Sarah Robinson 14 Nov 1822 in PA or VA/WV.  this is my line.   They had the following children;

Daughter, name unknown, b. abt 1820 according to census.
Elizabeth  Boyd b. 19 Dec 1823 - 1828  possibly in Brooke Co. VA/WV  m. William Moreland 1 Aug 1844 in Carroll Co. OH   d. 16 Jan 1879 ( last 2 numbers on her stone are worn, date is a best guess)  age 50y 28 d. She is buried at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Carroll Co. Oh near her parents.
John Boyd b. 19 June 1825, Collier's Station Brooke Co. VA/WV.  d. 8 Jan 1901. Came to Ohio with his parents by 1830. m. 1st Matilda McQueen 11 Oct 1847.   2nd  Catherine Chaney Palmer, a widow.  Matilda and John had the following children;

Amanda Boyd b  1848  m. John Rabe

James Robinson Boyd b 1849  m.  Hannah Poulton

John Marion Boyd b 1851  m. Minerva West
Mary Margaret Boyd b 1853  m. Remus Gartrell

William McQueen Boyd b 1855  m. Della Teter/s

Francis Boyd b  1857  m. Roseanne Moreland

Sarah Ann Boyd b 1859  m. John Smith  (my direct line)

These are letters written by Hugh S. Boyd to his brother James Boyd, who was living in Carroll Co. Ohio.  I have typed it as it was written, with blanks where I couldn't make out the words or the paper was bad.  Note, there was no punctuation and spelling was mostly phonetic.  Jane Grezlik   Carroll Co., OH

I hope everyone enjoys this as much as the first letter.  By the way, I am descended from the James Boyd line.  It appears that I have both abolitionist and Southern sympathizers in the family.  As other family lines were active in helping the underground railroad.
