The AIS Indexes
(Accelerated Indexing Systems)- US Census Indexes, are on microfiche
through your LDS Family History Center. The AIS indexes are alphabetical
listings of some of the people living in the US between 1607 and 1906.
The listings were compiled from various sources such as state census',
tax lists, indentured servant lists, residence lists, oath of allegiance
lists, petition list, muster rolls, voter lists, probate records,
veterans schedules, slave schedules, passenger lists, and mortality
schedules. For the years 1790 and later, information from the federal
census is also included (there was no Federal Census before 1790). The
indexes usually provide enough information about individuals listed,
that you should be able to find them in the original record. Each AIS
index covers ten or more years and a large geographical area, such as
several states, which will make it easier to find an ancestor.
To confirm the data in
the AIS census indexes, one should consult the original source documents
which are usually noted in the AIS data.
If you would like
additonal detailed information concerning the AIS Census Indexes see:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/RG/frameset_rhelps.asp
NOTE:
Use this data as a finding tool, just as you would any other secondary
source. When you find the name of an ancestor listed, confirm the facts
in original sources.

NOTES
TO RESEARCHERS
When
you use this site, please keep in mind the difference between
primary and secondary sources and the importance of checking those
sources. Accept nothing without further checking. It is our hope
that through this collection of data from many sources, you will
find a piece of the puzzle that you are working on and that may
lead you to other discoveries.
