D. (David) A. Boyd / Mary Gravatt

Virginia to Tennessee

D. (David) A. Boyd, a farmer of Lauderdale County, is a son of George and Mary (Halley) Boyd. His father was born in Halifax County, Va., in 1800, and his mother in Mecklenburg County, Va., in 1801; they were married about 1825, and seven sons and two daughters were born to them.  Mr. Boyd, Sr., was in the war of 1812, was not connected with any church, in politics was an old line Whig, and died in 1855. Mrs. Boyd was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church; she died in 1870.

Our subject was of Scotch-Irish descent, born in Halifax County, Va., in February, 1830, was raised on a farm, and received a good education.  March, 1850, he married Miss Mary Gravatt, who was born in Halifax County, Va., in 1835.  Nine of the twelve children born to this marriage are living.  In 1857, he moved to Haywood County, Tenn., and in 1862 to Lauderdale County, where he has since engaged in farming.  Mrs. Boyd is a Primitive Baptist; he is a member of the Methodist Church South.  Before the war Mr. Boyd was a Whig, and has since been a Republican. In 1881, he represented Lauderdale County in the Legislature, serving two years.  He owns 275 acres of good land, and also runs a cotton-gin. As a farmer he has been quite successful, and is considered one of the substantial and enterprising citizens of his district.  He is a member of the Masonic lodge.

--Goodspeed's Bios. of Lauderdale Co., TN

David & Mary's children:

1.  William Henry b. approx. 1851
2.  Harriett E. b. approx. 1852
3.  Virginia (Jennie) T. b. approx. 1854
4.  Susan A. b. approx. 1856
5.  George D. b. approx. 1858
(These 5 names were originally listed in the 1860 Haywood County census. By the time of the 1880 census, they were all old enough to have married or left home. The next six showed up on the 1880 Lauderdale census)

6.  Jefferson b. approx. 1862
7.  Lizzie (Elizabeth Wade) b. approx. 1864 (or 65)
8.  Hiram, b. approx. 1867
9.  Lewis b. approx. 1867 (must have been Hiram's twin? - the 1880 census lists both as age 13)
10.  Richard D. b. approx. 1870
11.  Minnie b. approx. 1873

This only accounts for 11 children - but there may have been an infant death - not unusual in those times.

I also got the following from a marriage lookup request. This is also from the 1880 Lauderdale census and it is most likely that these are David and Mary's children (the ages and the census district match):

John White, age 32, b. SC, occupation Farmer
Harriet White, age 27, b. VA.
children: Harriet V, age 5, b. TN
David H., age 2 months, b. TN

(William) Henry Boyd, age 29, occupation Farmer
Mary Boyd, age 33, b. TN
children:  Florence, age 2, b. TN
David, age 1 month, b. TN
Alex Halliburton, stepson, age 11, b. TN
(Mary is also referred to as "Mollie G." in some records.  Halliburton was her prior married name. I do not know her maiden name -info from researcher).

Both Harriet and William Henry show marriage dates of June 18, 1873.

W. R. Halliburton, age 25, b. TN, occupation Farmer
V. T. (Virginia "Jennie") Halliburton, age 25
children:  S. A. Halliburton (daughter), age 6, b. TN
Carry (Carrie?) Halliburton (daughter), age 2, b. TN
Londro Colwell, 19, black male, b. AL, occupation Farm Laborer Servant
Arthur Scott, 19, black male, b. AL, occupation Farm Laborer Servant
("Jennie's middle name was most likely Tennessee - the combination was rather common back then" - info from researcher)   Jennie's marriage date is shown as February 10, 1874
